Psychotherapists, marriage counselors and divorce attorneys know that many people file for divorce at the start of the new year. This trend has been true for many years.

But why is this so?

There are several reasons for people filing for divorce at the start of a new year:

-For some people this is part of a new year’s resolution. So, like dieting, quitting smoking, exercising regularly and changing jobs, many people resolve their marital discord as they start a new calendar year.

-Some unhappy couples decide to “stay together for the holidays.” They do not want to upset their families during a season that is supposed to be a festive one.

-For some couples, the decision may be driven by tax considerations and financial considerations.
